About our #RoyalBATIK print: In 2024 and beyond we're celebrating the unique indigenous resist printing techniques of West Africa and S.E. Asia. The digitalADIRE print collection pays homage to the cultural heritage of àdìre (a traditional Nigerian Yoruba tie-and-dye printing method using cassava paste illustrations working against indigo dye), batik (a traditional Indonesian Java wax-resist printing method using indigo dye), as well as the history of enslaved Africans' back-breaking work to harvest indigo in the American southern states of South Carolina and New Orleans.

In our Royal BATIK print variations of deep purple, the color associated with royalty are manipulated. Indonesian batik was used traditionally for ceremonial garments for royalty exclusively. Batik is a print-making technique originating in Java, Indonesia. The Javanese words “amba” which means “to write or draw” and tiktik” which means “dot” combine to create the word and technique we call “batik”. Traditional S.E. Asian batiks are created by applying hot wax directly to silk or cotton cloth using a metal “canting” tool. Our Royal BATIK motif pays homage to this laborious technique, the floral/fauna of S.E. Asia, and African symbols of royalty.
